Here's a closeup. Definitely hundreds of amps were involved, so I would like to see "the other guy".
I actually thought it was a bullet when I first saw the picture, and my mind went to work trying to determine caliber. I Knew it was pretty small due to size of wire strands visible, but was sure it wasn't a .22 because they are only copper coated lead rather than copper jacketed and get significantly distorted when they hit anything much more substantial than a paper target. It was still stuck in the cable, so it probably was very low power.

I didn't realize I was on the wrong track until your post#8.

If your frame has a corresponding weld mark, it is grounded.

My frame always had stray voltage, but testing with an ammeter to both pack positive and pack negative never amounted to anything. This was more than stray current - as in hundreds of amps. Unfortunately, I may never know, as I've already installed the new SR 48500 in its place, but had to make up several new cables, as each cable was custom fit for my AXE, and the new SR 48500 not only has different terminals, but I had to relocate it from where my AXE was due to size. I cannot imagine what that thing hit, as it looks sharp and was obviously the other polarity of the damaged cable.

Oh well. It's running now.

Knowing you like to experiment, you are going to love the SR.

Mystery solved. Cable from controller B+ to solenoid touched motor post A2 - actually cable terminal. That essentially created a dead short from M- to B+. It must have been a hell of a bump, as I tried to keep all cables far away from the motor. I obviously hit that bump with the pedal to the floor.

The odd thing is that I never noticed a problem until I started getting under temp error codes. The guts of the AXE controller still work, but the "smart" parts are "protecting" it from running in -25°C conditions.

FWIW, while playing around with mounting location, I managed to piss it off and got a six red error code (Low Throttle Under range), and controller refused to send a B- to the solenoid until I cleared the Auto-Cal. So it apparently not only stops when it senses trouble, but will refuse to run on a previous problem until cleared.

It won't run as long as the problem exists. The error flags reset when the problem is cleared.
