Is the smell something you can live with or is it passed that point?

Start saving money for new batteries, foreign substances in a Lead Acid Battery typically either corrodes the elements or leads to quicker self discharge by creating an active environment.

Unless someone purchased the research document referenced, it is unknown from the excerpt what battery chemistry was being discussed.

If I were to drive it (which I won't until I know what I'm dealing with) then I don't think it will be bad. Closed up in the garage it's a little much. But it's sweet smelling which is the only reason it even dawned on me what I did.

They'll be 4 years old this summer but I've been a tyrant on maintaining them so I'm pissed at myself.

If its isolated to one battery and it's less than 2 years old just swap that one out. If you did them all then I would error on the side of caution and change them all.
