Default Is this motor bad?

98 EZGO when I step on the gas it moves slowly then stops moving and the motor sounds like it’s spinning. I pulled the motor off and it doesn’t spin freely. Feels like it’s grinding in the housing. The interconnect from motor to drive unit looks good. When I hooked it to the cart batteries and was wondering if a grinding sound on the motor is normal. Thanks in advance for the help.

Default Is this motor bad?

Have you checked the wheel hubs? The motor won’t spin freely when it’s not in the cart- it doesn’t have a from bearing. DO NOT run the motor while not connected to the rear end. That will destroy it pretty quickly.

This really sounds like a stripped spline in the hub. Probably passenger side. Remove the whee and the castellated nut and take a look.

The motor only has one bearing and needs to be installed on the axle housing in order to properly test it.

LukeL beat me to it!

It’s not the hub splines those are good and I replaced them thinking that was the problem. Not sure where to go from here with it. The coupling from the motor to the drive unit seems to be in good shape too.

It’s a 98 ezgo sepex DCS. Originally what started this was when I pressed the pedal the cart would start moving, then it would stop and it sounded like the motor would keep running but it wouldn’t move. I checked the hub spline and they were good. Battery voltage is good. So I pulled the motor to check the coupler and from the motor side the coupler looks good. Not sure if I need to remove the entire coupler like maybe it’s stripped from the drive side of the unit. If I jack the rear wheels off the ground and run it everything seems to run fine, when it’s under load sounds like the motor is running but it’s not going anywhere

When you say voltage is good, did you check it while trying to go under load? You need to, if you haven't, just to rule that out. One bad battery can read fine at rest, but drop excessively under load, hence the load test.

I will reassemble it and test it under load and get back with the results. Thank you for all the help.
