Speed controllers and regen braking
Hi all, I've been reading quite a bit about solutions for my specific situation. I just acquired a 2015 TXT48. Still 100% stock. Everything works great. It had been a long time since I drove a golf cart. I have a medical problem that makes braking a bit difficult. The cart is just for neighborhood jaunts. Small hills. Some grass. Little traffic. A couple of hills made me nervous when braking. When looking for solutions I notice a few speed controllers had on-the-fly regen adjustments. My question is how stout can you make the regen? I'm wondering if a custom mix of acceleration, speed and regen might be a better use of money than goofing around with different brake systems. Any suggestions would be a great help.

Re: Speed controllers and regen braking
The Regen is somewhat adjustable in the stock controller, more so in aftermarket controllers. None can hold the motor at zero rpm (only the AC systems can do that). But they can be strong Regen, down to about 1 mph.

Re: Speed controllers and regen braking
I don't know how far the regen braking of a stock TXT48 controller can be turned up, but I've got the regen braking set to about 1/4 of its max on my Alltrax XCT400PDS controller and it'll take me down to walking speed from over 25MPH and it'll slow way down descending fairly steep hills.
The beauty of the XCT controller is that it is user programmable from a laptop, so the various parameters, like regen braking, can be tweaked to your liking. Also, there is an optional FNKS control that allows you to adjust the regen on the fly so you can crank it up higher as needed. |

Re: Speed controllers and regen braking
How would I go about getting the stock controller adjusted? Mostly interested in more robust Regen but more speed would be nice too.

Re: Speed controllers and regen braking
A friend of mine hooked up a handheld unit about the size of my multi-meter. I don't know exactly what he did, but it went from a top speed of around 13 mph to a bit over 17 with 20" tires. The regen is set to the max level of three. It is strong, but I like it. Almost to the level of the RXV [until around 6-7 mph] I drove for a bit. It's fun watching the voltage climb on a downhill run. I can accelerate up any of the hills at camp. Before I could hold speed, but not gain like I can now. 2013 TXT48

Re: Speed controllers and regen braking
Do you remember if the profiles can be set independently, for example max speed and max regen, or are they done like the old personality profiles where you get a group choice like Hilly...etc? Also, how much slower is the cart going downhill with a load vs before? Thanks.

Re: Speed controllers and regen braking
I don't believe the Ez-Go QuiQ chargers have any other algorithms in them. I believe cgtech has the capabilities to change them. Maybe PM him for an answer if he doesn't jump in.

Re: Speed controllers and regen braking
I think we are talking motor controllers here, not chargers. And each driving profile can have it's Regen adjusted if I recall.

Re: Speed controllers and regen braking
I had a discussion about max regen control with my Alltrax tech rep. Their engineers told me there is no safe limit on how much regen can be applied to the motor. So the FN2 could be set very high and the user could apply braking with a knob control and still add braking with the foot control if needed. This using any XCT controller.
