Did I just screw up my 94 36 volt motor?
I have a 36 volt dc motor 3.5 hp 3500 rpm . It is in a 94 ds powerdrive cart.
The cart stopped dead. After troubleshooting determined there was a problem in the motor. I pulled the motor, and took it apart. I found one brush was gone, and the wire was was just laying there. I went ahead and ordered some new brushes But meanwhile i did this : Since the motor was real dirty and nasty, I wanted to clean it. So i pulled out the armature and noticed most of the slots ( grooves) looked like they were clogged up with crap. So i took a screwdriver and started tapping the crap out of the slots. After I got all done, i realized maybe i wasn't suppose to remove that crap?? Maybe it was part of the stuff they dip the armature in? Did I screw this up, or will it still work when i put it back together with new brushes? Education is priceless!!! |

Re: Help- Did I ust screw up my 94 36 volt motor?
Good pictures would be nice. There should be some slot between the conductors on the armature but it's not very deep. It does get filled with crap. If the armature doesn't look very clean and smooth, it needs to be turned. Bad connection here will do damage very quickly.

yikes. That doesn't sound promising. I will try to get a picture this afternoon of it. As I was scraping out the crap in the grooves, every once in awhile I would find something that appeared to be a white string in some of the grooves.
How do i clean up the armature? Can i sand it ? Can i clean it with something that i can wipe on it or spray on it? |

electronics cleaner
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...-crc_7070074-p do not use Brake cleaner... brake cleaner is harmful for electric motors when you clean them. |

I it looks like it needs "sanding" take it to a motor shop and have them turn it. You want it clean and smooth to go with new brushes.
