Default Rear bearings getting noisy?

Since installing a new motor, I'm hearing a clicking sound coming from the rear of the cart when coasting at low speed and when in reverse.
It goes away when power is applied going forward and when coasting in reverse.

I cannot hear it when the cart is jacked up and run, nor tell which side it is coming from when it is on the ground.

I tightened the castle nuts on the axles 1/6 turn and the noise didn't change, so I'm fairly certain it isn't loose/stripped hubs.

The differential gears appeared to be in good shape and sounded okay when turned by hand while I inspected them after sliding to a stop from 33MPH with a seized motor and I filled it with a 80/20 mix of SAE-40 and STP when I put the pan back on.

It just seems odd the way the noise goes away when power is applied going forward and when coasting in reverse, but I guess it is time to replace the axle bearings.

Any pointers on the simplest way to changing rear axle bearings for an old guy that isn't as nimble as he used to be?

Hi Johnny had same problem , I have chrome wheels on my cart , they have a tendency to loosen up try tightening the wheel nuts tighter this eliminated my issue , just a thought if that does not do it then its bearing time

If you change the outer wheel bearings a slide hammer makes it easy for the bearings and seals. The bearings are easy to find. The seals that are like OEM are harder to find. EZ go and Polaris have them. This diagram is courtesy of Scotty B

IF its a bearing I would wait for it to identify itself (clearly) Took a year for my 08 PDS to finally call for repair on a noisy axle bearing. But take heed, what you are describing could be an input shaft noise ?

I had to remove the wheels to get the cotter pins out of the castle nuts and looked for signs of movement at the wheel/drum interface. I've had loose wheel issue on other vehicles, so checking for the marks that it causes is almost automatic whenever I pull a wheel.

And I tightened the lug nuts good and tight after I put the wheels back on.

Thanks for the tip.

Ouch!!!! That is most definitely a possibility. I did stress the input shaft bearings considerably when I removed the mounting bolts and let it the seized motor spin while I moved the cart.

It seems strange that the sound a bad input shaft bearing was making, would go away when I lifted the rear tires off the ground, but I've seen and heard of stranger things.

Replacing the axle bearings was already on my to-do list for this winter because I'm spinning them about 50% faster than they've ever been spun before and in the interim I'm going to try to pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

Hopefully, whatever is making the noise will hang in there until I put the cart away for the winter.

Is this the same rear-end that your motor got cat hair sucked into?
