Default Steering column bearing ?

I get a slight knock in the steering column when driving so tonight I pulled the steering wheel off to inspect as I figured there must be a bushing or a bearing inside the column . I was surprised at how easy the wheel came off as I read it was a nightmare for most , 2 wacks on the bolt with a BFH and off she came . I pulled the retainers off (x2) and slightly started to lift the bearing (if that's what you want to call it ) and I could see the bearings and it looked as though the bearing will separate ? and the bearings will spill out ? didn't even look like there is enough bearings inside ? I searched for the bearing but cannot find it anywhere any help ?
