Actually my next "test" would have been to remove the 12 volt neg cable and 12 volt pos cable from the starter and see what the voltage drop was with out the load. That would have led to a starter problem. No worries, I'm shure he will figure it out.

I agree. The symptoms you have described point to a weak or discharged battery (not necessarily defective) or poor connections in the high current starter loop (this could include worn starter brushes). I recently had similar symptoms on my G16 and found that the positive battery terminal had developed a hairline crack. No amount of tightening would provide a solid connection. Replaced that terminal and it is better than before. Good luck - RAY

PS - Typically what happens when cranking, the engine goes up against compression causing maximum current draw in the starting system. A poor connection somewhere in the heavy cable loop will drop a lot of voltage causing low voltage at the starter with inadequate voltage "push" at the starter. That's the voltage smallblock wants you to measure !

If the battery voltage is "normal" ~11 - 12V while cranking, and it drops to 4.8V at the starter, that means that there is excessive resistance somewhere between the battery and the starter. Usually the spot where the resistance is, will also get hot. Usual culprits are battery terminals, solenoid connections, or starter connections. Of course, it's also possible that the starter has a couple of shorted windings in it, which is causing it to pull much more current than normal.

Hopefully you didn't buy a new starter for nothing.

Well I did.but it does not hesitate as long as it did, but occasionaly it will hesitate. I have a brand new battery, new soleniod, new starter generator. It looks like too much engine compression for the starter to turn it.....sometimes.???

How much compression did you build this thing to have? Something like 13:1?
