With spark and compression testers and a can of starting fluid you can zero in pretty quickly in what area an engine problem lies.

I've got the exact issues with my Yamaha 2007 ydra...is that part still called an ignitor?

If you know someone with a G2 like yours, best test is swap the ignitor and then you know. If you can't, it will show no spark when hot. Some people have squeezed the ignitor case and it worked or had issue with the plug connecting to it. They are expensive but rarely go out.
