Default Tested oil pump on 89; Surprise!

After reading numerous cart owners with 2 cycle oil injected motors state that they have disconnected their pumps and have gone to pre-mix, I decided I wanted to know how much oil my motor was actually getting.

I attached two tubes vertically to a board and connected one to the oil pump and one to the gas line. I then used a calibrated syringe to inject specific amounts of oil and gas respectively.

I preformed two tests; one with the motor running slow and another running full throttle. The big surprise was that the motor burned 2 1/2 times as much oil while running slow than it did running fast.

(fast 145ml gas/1ml oil; 145:1) (slow 145ml gas 2.5ml oil; 58:1)

This is opposite of what I would have expected!

I have heard cart owners using pre-mix anywhere from 50:1 to the spec'ed 128:1, I think I might go with 100:1 and unhook the pump.

Any thoughts??

the pumps are known to fail and wil do so wthout any warning. I would premix and get rid of the pump.

I have an old G1 Yammy gasser that I run 70:1 it runs fine and dosen't smoke much. I've read that if you run too much oil you run the risk of filling your muffler with oil. When that happens I hear you then have a muffler Bar- b- que to clean it out.

I don't think you will catch fire. When I said a muffler bar-b-que I meant you light a bar-b-que and roast the muffler to clean it out.

I guess I meant that I run it that rich for fear of running too lean and scorching the cylinder and piston.

I read somewhere that one of the reasons the cart companies engineered the carts to use little oil was because the courses did not want smokey carts driving around.

Although 128:1 is not too little for idle, many jet skis idle at that ratio, recreational carts are not driven the same as they are on a course.

I like a variable injection system and was hoping that my pump delivered from 128:1 up to about 90:1, therefore I would have kept that system in place and premixed abou 20:1. That would have given me a range of 108:1 at idle and 70:1 running hard.

Unfortunately my pump has more output at the lower rpm's; there could be a reason I am not aware of.
