Default Bought another cart - need help

We just picked up a 1979 gas EZgo. The guy said the belt was worn out and it wouldn't move. We don't believe that, but there is something wrong and I'm not sure where to start. Keep in mind I'm a newbie and don't know all the technical terms so I'll try my best to explain what I'm talking about. The engine runs great. The clutch with the weights in it slides fine and narrows on the belt, but the other clutch with the spring, does not widen. I can turn this clutch freely in the rearend. Does this sound like a clutch problem, rearend problem, where do I start? All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

If you cab spin teh rear clutch freely abd nothing happens, then something is internally wrong in the tranny / rear end / axles / brake drums...

Let's hope it's just that, but I would think if it were just the hub that you could feel some resistence at the clutch...

REAR END

Jack it up, take off the tires and start looking, feeling, learning and testing...

ok jacked up rearend. when we give it gas the left rear wheel turns. the clutch doesn't squeeze the belt real tight, but there is no load. should we tear into the rear end?

I'm just tyrying to remember what carts looked like 30 years ago! Is the clutch on the back side of the motor, of does it come off the drivers side of the motor?

the clutches are between the motor and rearend. sits sideways compared to our 92 yamaha. Anyway, we were just about to tear into the rearend when my husband turned the left rear wheel, and I noticed that the axle (splined part in center of wheel) was spinning inside the wheel on the right side. We took off the hub (which I believe is listed as brake drum), and the center is completely wallered out. No splines left what so ever and kind of egg shaped. I'll be ordering one of those tomorrow and we'll see were that leaves us. Is it possible that this is all that was wrong? It seems way too simple. It is the short axle side.
