Piston Ring Question

Hi Guys,
I have recently acquired an 84 G1 that wouldn't run - no compression. Of coarse upon pulling the head the piston flops around in the jug :(
Ok I got a new top end kit & looking at the rings I want to make sure my thinking is right. At the ring gap one side of the ring comes closer together than the other - as best as I can explain it (see the pic). My thinking is the closer side as I am calling it goes towards the top of the piston on the top groove but does it do the same for the bottom or is it just the oposite with the closer side pointing to the bottom of the piston??

For the folks playing at home:
Rings in two-stroke engines are pinned in the grooves to prevent them from rotating and the ends getting caught in the cylinder ports. Line up the cutout in the ring with the pin in the piston groove when installing. If you do not, or do it incorrectly, the ring will not compress when you try to slide the cylinder down over the piston assembly.

I think you'll find that the piston ring groove has a small pin in it. The piston ring ends are machined to clear this pin. The purpose of the pin is to locate the ring gap strategically so it does not get into any of the ports. When reassembling, you need to insure that the piston ring gap lines up properly with this pin. RAY

Yup you guys are right! I got the motor back together last night & noticed the brass tube for the oil injection has came out of the carb ( still in the oil line though). Don't want to just stick it back in there - any suggestions?

Clean it up really well and stick it back in there with a dab of JB Weld (epoxy). You don't want that fitting to vibrate out so you lose lubrication to your engine.
