Battery corrosion problem
Newbie here with a corrosion problem. Not so much the batteries but the bracket the batteries sit in. I had noticed some corrosion residue on the floor underneath the cart and finally decided to pull the batteries to have a look. Corrosion is built up all around the brackets and the two hanger screws that hold the plastic brackets on top of the batteries are corroded through.
So I've put baking soda on the corrosion to clean it and plan to scrape and sand the brackets to bare metal and paint but what can I do to prevent this in the future? Thanks |

Re: Battery corrosion problem
The most common reason for what your describing is the batteries being over-filled and boiling over, running down the batteries, and settling on the box...thus causing this build-up...water level in batteries should only be about an 1/8 inch over the cell plates to stop from boiling over. Make sure you put a coat of paint on box after sanding and Ive gone to using a protective uncoat also...

Re: Battery corrosion problem
Thanks. I'm new to owning a cart as well and probably have overfilled the batteries.

Re: Battery corrosion problem
I had to completely replace the battery trays in my '84 Marathon. I used Rustoleum truck bed liner and used a paintbrush to put it on. Looked sloppy as all get out when I painted 'em, but dried flat and tough-as-nails after about 24 hours. Other folks on this forum have done the same with good results. I may put another coat on the trays before I reinstall the batteries, just for the added protection.
