You need a multi tester (voltmeter) with an ohms setting. Set the range to 0-20,000 ohms. Unplug the 2 wires that go from the potentiometer to the controller at pin #2 & 3.
Insert your test leads into these two wire's spade ends... the meter should read less than a few ohms. Press the gas peddle and watch the meter. It should rise to 5000 but not more than 6000. If the cart is in reverse this reading is reduced by 50%.
