Default cart moves with no foot on pedal.

My wife was riding around the yard when the cart kept hauling butt even though here foot was not on the pedal. Then after she stood on the brakes it stopped moving. A couple hours later I came home, stepped on the pedal and it took off like normal for 40 ft then stopped moving again. I can hear all five solenoids clicking when I push down slowly on the pedal. What do I check from here?

5 solenoid cart, one solenoid is sticking.
This is rare, often a sticky solenoid will disengage if you smack it with the handle of a long screwdriver (or other light hammer)
Put the cart on jacks - remove the seat...
work the gas up and down the 5 solenoid engagement range until it sticks on. then start tapping the solenoids one at a time - see if you can find and replace the stickie one.

PS
If it happens to the wife or you while driving simply put the gear selector in neutral to stop.

10-4. Right now it doesn't move at all. If one of the solenoids stopped working would the others make it move?

The solenoid on the drivers end of the line up is the master. It supplies main battery power to all the other solenoids when it closes. Remember solenoids can click but not engage. you won't get much farther without a meter, a diagram, and fair understanding how 5 micro switches operate 5 solenoids that regulate speed in this baby

Well I got a meter. Can I get the info I need from that to know if that solenoid is working?

Can I get the solenoid from the local automotive store?

okay, automotive solenoids are intermittent duty. Golf cart solenoids are continuous duty, if you use automotive solenoids they won't last.

Think of the solenoid as and on/off switch. It has two parts, the two small wires make up the activation circuit. One of these is positive and one is negative. When both + & - are present on the small wires they create a magnetic field that draws the contactor in to form a connection between the two big cables.

That is how all five of the solenoids work. You can check these functions with your multimeter. Remember the solenoid farthest on the drivers side is the master. It must function first before any of the other solenoids have battery pack power. Good luck
