03 FE290 - gas in the oil?
Changed the oil on my Grandpa's 03 DS this morning before taking it to camp for him. Stick showed a little over full, and the oil was milky-ish.
IMG_20140502_194103_745.jpg Governor is hooked up and the cart is driven easily by an 84 year old man. Does this look like gas in the oil to you guys? What could be the cause of this? I always change the oil in spring and use exactly the right amount (37 oz.) and the stick shows exactly full when I'm done. And yes, I used a Fram filter last time used STP this time. |

Re: 03 FE290 - gas in the oil?
It sort of does, but not strongly. The stick was definitely showing over full though, even though it had shown exactly full last time I changed the oil. The only two liquids in the engine are oil and gas, so it just about has to be gas. I just don't know where it could get into the oil other than maybe past the rings?? It doesn't smoke at all.

Was the float ever sticking open?
Also, does the fuel pump run off an engine pulse? Maybe a small hole in the pump diaphram. |

Re: 03 FE290 - gas in the oil?
I don't think the pump runs off pulses, it's remote mounted. It's awful but I don't know all that much about it nor have I ever done much to it except change the oil, plug, and filters cause it's never caused any problems before, plus it doesn't reside at my house. It's never acted like it's had a stuck float before, sure never flooded on anyone or acted rich anyhow...

I'm sure the pump will run off the engine pulse, unless it's been replaced with an electric. It will have 3 hoses connected to it. One in, one out, and one for the pulse line.

Re: 03 FE290 - gas in the oil?
Yup, it does! I was doing some reading since that last post, feel like a dummy. This cart just hasn't been troublesome enough in the past to let me get well acquainted with it. I'll check that out, plus I'll have a look in the carb when I get up to camp, since that's where my Grandparents and the cart are currently. Some threads I came across indicated that ethanol fuel wreaks havoc on the fuel system on these carts and eats up the pump like you stated and also gums up the needle in the carb. I always have filled the cart with ethanol free 90 octane and I told my Grandpa to do that as well, but maybe he's been running the 87 with ethanol...

No need to feel like a dummy. We've ALL been there!
I would guess the pump diaphram first. Remove the pulse line and see if there is any fuel in it. You shouldn't be able to suck/blow into the pump except enough to move the diaphram. |

I'll have a go at it as soon as I can get to camp, shouldn't be much longer than a week or two. Worst case scenario is I have to change the oil in it again once/if I find a problem. I'd love to mod the crap out of the thing, since I KNOW it has a good bit of untapped power in it, but I can't see that being too healthy for my Grandpa, his reflexes aren't getting any quicker. |
