Can I recondition a set of Crown 8 volt batteries?
Ok, so a buddy of mine bought a 48 volt Club Cart and after a brutal Michigan winter he needed to replace his batteries. He asked me to come over and swap the batteries out, which I did. His cart is now running fine.
However, after further testing of his batteries I believe that I can recondition the old batteries and use them in my personal cart. Here are the current voltages of the batteries now: Battery 1-----3.75 volts Battery 2-----3.65 volts Battery 3-----3.70 volts Battery 4-----3.62 volts Battery 5-----3.82 volts Battery 6-----1.72 volts--------I am sure this battery is no good due to the low voltage Can I put a battery charger on each individual battery and try and get the voltage up to 8 volts? The one battery that is super low I can pretty much replace just that one battery with a new one since I don't think it will hold a charge. Only reason I am asking the pros on here is because I have a 95 Club Cart DS and it has been sitting for 4 years because I can't afford $900 for a set of batteries. Hopefully these batteries can be reconditioned and I can use my cart again. My kids will be so excited! Let me know what you guys think. |

Re: Can I recondition a set of Crown 8 volt batteries?
Short answer is NO you can not recondition a set of batteries....
You can try some intense charging on them to see what they will come back up to but after that your done.... There is no mystery snake oil concoction or treatments that will rejuvenate a battery... Be forewarned that charging bad batteries is known to generate a lot of heat and may cause said batteries to go BOOM too.... Sorry to disappoint both you and your kids.... |

Everything I know about batteries and people trying to recondition never worked long term. We used to add acid to them long ago and recharge and that was the only solution that somewhat worked. I don't think you can even do that anymore. Being in the state they are, if you want to try, you have nothing to loose. I wouldn't spend money on additives though. Top off with water and charge them. JMO!

The batteries listed above are getting more damaged by the HOUR.
You will not get much run time from them if you can get them up above 8v. irreversible damage has been done The #s look pretty bad ..... you might try recharging the 5 but i would ..... Count them as cores. |

Re: Can I recondition a set of Crown 8 volt batteries?
I put one of them on a slow trickle charger and had it charge up and it's at 8.80 volts. There was some battery acid that leaked out of it but I think that's normal. Sounds like everyone in here swears these batteries are no good. Maybe I should just forget it and not bother charging the other ones.

you nothing to loose by charging them to see what happens.... you may get enough life to get a few short trips out of them. just keep an eye on them during charging that they don't get to hot . just go into it knowing that your not going to get perfect batteries that will give you 20 miles run time

Re: Can I recondition a set of Crown 8 volt batteries?
Ok, I literally took the charger off the one battery and checked the voltage and it read 8.8 volts. It has only been an hour or so since I took the charge off the battery. I will check it tomorrow to get another voltage reading. I have a really nice Sears Craftsman multimeter. The water lever was about 1/4 above the plates before charging. I have not checked the water level after charge. However I can go out to the garage and check it now. I am a noob to the electric carts and I really appreciate everyone's help. Thanks again!

You need new batteries, it's time to recharge that battery, at 8.07 is 50% that battery is at 60% right now, the battery should be at 8.49 fully charged
