RPMs at top speed? - 2018 Onward (EX-40 Engine)

I'm installing one of those electric tachometers that reads the signal from a wire wrapped around the spark plug wire. Sometimes they need a little tuning.

I want to establish a frame of reference for the tuning process.

I have a 2018 Onward lifted 4-pass with the EX-40 engine. It runs at a top speed of 23.7 mph (GPS verified). It is completely stock, but set up by dealer as a LSV for street use here in FL.

What should the RPM's be approximately at that top speed?

Manual says peak HP is at 3600RPM. I'm sure the governor doesn't let it cruise nearly at that RPM.

The tach was reading about 3100-3200 when cruising at top speed. Not sure if that's accurate, but doesn't seem like it would be too far off.

To run 23mph, yeah it will probably be turning 3,200 or so. Some people who have run them faster hit the rev limiter around 25 mph. Rev limiter on those is set for around 3,500 if I remember right.

Thanks. I'm definitely not looking to disable the governor or rev limiter.

I might do a little conservative experiment with the zip tie mod to maybe squeeze out another 2 mph.

We'll see. There definitely should be no issue running this motor at 3600 if the rev limiter allows.

If you live where its flat you can put high speed gears in it and run 30 comfortably, top out around 35-37 at higher rpm.

If your cart is an LSV does it have front brakes installed?

My only concern with the taller gears is losing acceleration for when I have to cross the main roads. But yes it is flat here in FL.

Do not have front brakes as its apparently not required in this county.

UPDATE:

Did the zip tie mod and it accelerates smoothly no jerkiness at all.

Got a top speed of 27.8 at about 3900 RPM. I didn't hit the rev limiter or experience any valve float. I don't really know if the tach is accurate, but it helped to establish a baseline RPM at the original top speed.

I definitely will loosen the zip-tie a bit, because the way I have it set right now would probably result in over revving if I just mash the gas pedal.

I also ordered a GPS speedometer, so I can try to keep the speed around 25 max.

If anybody cares, I got the zip tie dialed in. I didn't loop it around the spring. I used two zip ties and ran one through the other's "catch". That way it's a straight tie with no loop.

It is now perfect at about 3500-3600 rpm and a top speed of about 24-26.

I've attached the service manual for the Subaru EX40 EFI and it shows ECU rev limiter engages at 4400 RPM. Thought this info would be helpful for someone.
