There should be no gasket between the transmission and the axle where the splines line up and it slides onto the axle. It really should only be 3 or 4 bolts holding it on. And there should be an oil seal in the transmission where it meets the splined part of the rest of the axle. Unless you’ve got some type of goofy axle I haven’t seen before, I still think you’re not seeing how it comes off.

As for the shifter mechanism, it slides onto the top of the shift fork. It only goes on one way, otherwise it just jams up and doesn’t move. You can move the shifter mechanism where the cable attaches and watch it move inside the case. When you move the shifter link you can watch the shift fork slide back and forth.

Got it apart , was definitely the shift fork. Thanks for the help- however I will contend that there is no way I could’ve done that in the frame

I see what you’re saying about taking it out now, but I think it would’ve been a pain in the frame in my opinion
