Default 86 Marathon 2 stroke boggs down

Hi guys I'm looking for a little help on my cart. It has a 2 stroke I installed Hei conversion, new carb, new throttle cable ,new choke cable and new fuel pump. It starts right up and goes good for a few minutes then seems to bog down especially on hills. It alos has a 1" shorter than stock belt on it. 2 things I have a question about are when I replaced the fuel pump there was a 1/2" space under the pump, Is this necessary? And it used to feel like it was shifting out when driving fast but now when you it an incline it boggs down and feels like it shifts down and climbs a little then if the hill is steep at all it just stops and seems to have low rpms not enough to work the clutches. Thats the best I can describe for now any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

SInce I got no response on this post I'll try to update what I have found and pose some more questons. Can bad engine mounts cause this problem, I think all 3 of mine are shot. the engine moves way left under load. I have adjusted carb and the cart is on jack stands When you open it up the engine shifts left and some times the clutch will fully close and others it won't.

The enigine runs smooth through throttle but near top end it sounds like it's popping back through the carb. I'm just trying to learn what is going on with this cart.

Sounds like you drive clutch is dirty. If it's not closing at high rpm dirt could be preventing it from closing. You may have to remove the clutch cover inspect it and clean and lube. I have the shorter belt on mine and yes you can feel it shift when slowing down but it will climb a wall and is plenty fast for me.

Thanks Racin161 I was going to inspect both clutches but I wondered how much affect the motor mounts had on the clutch working. Also any ideas on why it sound like its poping back thru carb?

Hi Path Have you checked your compression lately? It sounds like you might be loosing it. That will cause popping and loose power.

Maybe just a throttle cable adjustment causing the back fire. I would address the clutch issue first then go from there.

Thanks for the input. The poping I'm talking about is not a true backfire but a small pop like an ignition detonation but more rapid and not loud at all just a pop pop pop while thge engine continues to run smoothly. I have not checked compression as of yet but the cart has plenty of power in reverse it will spin the tires, but in forward it just don't have the gitty up it should have like the clutch is not working right.
