Red face BIg Tires... Big Power???

I'm truly surprised to see the number of carts that have lift kits and Big tires. So does everyone pull their stock 12 or13 h.p.motor and put bigger motors in their carts? Gee I thought golf carts were to run around on golf coarses. Silly Me ! I know that's higher c.c. engines are higher h.p., but the prices on those bigger engines are unreal. So is this a 'Cart Thing' or a poor man's substitute for a side by side. I just hope that my 89 244 marathon runs after my in progress engine rebuild. Not Asking For Much at this point. Just trying to round up all of the parts, gaskets, and tools for this rebuild is kill'n me. Thanks to the tons of information on this forum, l will finish or Go Blind Trying.

I have 23 inch tires on my 87 marathon, and use it to plow snow. No motor mods except HEI. Even with no load it will not hit 4 grand, but still manages 15 or so mph, around 13 pushing 6 inches of snow! Do plan. On doing some porting when I have time, but customer cars come before a cart that does not "need" anything really.

Lot's of guys do get the big block craze.
I have a 25hp 720cc V-twin Subaru motor in my Ezgo with 25" mud tires, custom 4 link suspension, & 4 wheel wet disc brakes. It was a fun build and a it's still a kick in the pants to drive.
Golf cart mods are fun at any level

I would also add to this when the stock engine gets costly to repair many choose then to upgrade to a big block especially when the stock parts are out of production and hard to find and expensive. Once you go from 10 hp or so 20 hp + you find you cart becomes a whole lot more fun. Both my carts are used as beach buggies on the road so the xtra speed and power makes them much more comfortable with car traffic.

Thanks guys for your words of wisdom. I guess I'm just under estimating the abilities of these carts. I see the rugged design of the rear ends on these carts that looks like mini auto rear ends. I guess with a curb weight of around 600 lbs, before putting 2 or 3 people and gear on the carts, they must be pretty tuff. I'm hoping that stands true.

I may have a good answer in a week or so.

Waiting on the engine rebuild kit for my 295 EZ 9 HP. Cart with 22'' tires.

Need to pull some very long and steep hills in subdivision here in GA.

Not sure its going to have enough power!

So I hope you get some more response's here,

i have 22.5s on my 4 stroke 295 but where i live it is incredibly flat. on the few little hills (a couple are steep) it seems to do ok with just me in it.

Well put my 295 together last weekend and could not believe the power in this little 9 hp. engine. 22'' tires!

Two of us in it, about 390 lbs. + cart and it did a lot better then I thought it would.

Now someone before me had the governor wide open! But that should just pertain to speed and not power/torque on this 4 stroke.

Most carts we do have the economy 4'' lift and 22'' tires. I dont see any real issues, it gets along just fine. My personal cart has a 7'' lift, 25'' tires, and a 23hp vanguard with some goodies added and that is one heck of a machine!
