1988 2pg Flywheel Side Seal Replacement
Hi all. Love this forum. I just purchased an 88 EZGO Gas. It did not run when I bought it but I went thru the troubleshooting tips on this site and came down with no vacuum on the crankcase. With the MultiVac test, I could hear the leaking under the fan so I removed the flywheel and found the crankshaft seal loosely laying on top of the bearing. No vacuum or pressure possible with that. I am wondering if I can replace this seal right over the crank without opening the crankcase? Also, there was a spring between the seal and the bearing. I'm assuming this came out of the bearing. When I do press in the new seal, is it apparent the direction is should go on the casing? Thanks.

I did take some pictures and am including them here. I noted on another post that someone suggested peening the crankcase at the seal to avoid the seal being pushed out on backfire or otherwise. Is this a regular practice? If so, how much peening?

That spring will come inside the new seal. It keeps the seal from collapsing.
The spring side faces the bearing. The metal casing faces outside. Use Loctite, and stake the seal in 3 places. I would also suggest changing the rear seal while the engine is out. This is all done from the outside of the engine. |

Re: 1988 2pg Flywheel Side Seal Replacement
Thanks for the reply. Good advice for the small price of the seals. I have been reading up on the clutch. I don't have the removal tool but saw some posts on filling it with water and then using a bolt to advance the internal pressure. Have you used this method? Do you recommend it? Also, I was wondering if there are any sources for new crankcases for this engine. I like how this engine is put together and was thinking about complete rebuild with new or completely refurbished parts.

Re: 1988 2pg Flywheel Side Seal Replacement
Also, If you were wondering about the crankshaft end, the previous owner must have tried some work on it as the end had a split in the shaft. It looks as though it was there to run the oil pump on some models. It was collapsed on one side and that side broke off under finger pressure. I had to grind down the end of the crankshaft to allow the wheel puller a stable point to apply pressure. I don't think I needed that appurtenance on the end of the crank.

I used a brass rod that was fatter than the crankshaft threads, and then cranked a 3/4" fine thread bolt on that. I used an air impact to pop it off. The hitting motion of the impact helps.

Re: 1988 2pg Flywheel Side Seal Replacement
I just rebuilt my 85, I couldn't find any replacement crankcases but a total rebuild kit is available. It comes with everything including crankshaft, meaning you'll also get a new lower rod bearing too
I suggest you check the crank bearings for any slop while ya have it out, That's what led me to rebuild mine. If yours are worn those new seals won't last very long... Here's my thread on it. Good Luck http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-e...e-rebuild.html |

Re: 1988 2pg Flywheel Side Seal Replacement
I changed the seals on my 1991 3pg. Here are some pictures. My seal was actually popped out and I used a 1 1/4 pvc pipe to install the new ones, worked like a charm. Change both sides while you are there. That notch was for the oil injection pump but I removed that and I just mix my gas.
