Default 89 ezgo, 244cc robin 3pg, 1st (toy)cart issues.

Hi guys, new to this forum, this is my 1st cart, I've had it about a week trying to enjoy my issues and not get frustrated! Ha!, here's what I have, 89 marathon with the robin 244cc 3pg engine. I have gas leaking from the vent, I was told buy previous owner that was a new carb, and fuel pump,I bought another new one, and same issue? It will not leak while on jack stands, only while driving, I've been reading this forum before joining and here's what I've done and know so far, BBQ'd the muffler, disconnected oiler, removed oil tank, blocked off oiler hose to pump, and hose from carb, disconnected and blocked hole behind carb from oiler, and converted to premix , cleaned wet spark plug, disasembled and cleaned air cleaner assembly. I have checked compression about 122psi..... not sure where to go from here?? Against my better judgment I ordered another new carb (#3) im just having a hard time accepting that 2 new carbs both have stuck floats or something? But maybe the 3rd times a charm?

What next guys?? Thanks so much,.. from buffalo n.y

Welcome to BGW. You're just down the road from me.

Is the new fuel pump like the original that mounts to the side of the lower engine case?

Glad you mentioned that. the fuel pump has been moved to a bracket near the fuel tank (said it's new), I found out that's not wear it belonged because I bought a new one and the bottom is not threaded for the elbow he put in the excisting fuel pump,(must of tapped bottom of pump?) not sure why it was moved? Should I try to put new one back on motor? The holes look ok, meaning I don't think a bolt was broken inside? I could not find the bolt size or thread count of the 2 missing bolts that would hold fuel pump to engine,I assume he tapped the hole on the motor as well, because there's an elbow inside engine. Here's what I know about excisting fuel pump, it does look recently replaced, I pulled off the hose that goes to engine to see if gas was possibly going into engine, (it is dry, no signs of going to engine), I pulled off hose going to carb and started cart, it is pulsing out, not shooting out, just a little squirt pause and squirt again (steady ).. Im trying to attach pics,. This is a great site, everytime I look up cart question, buggies gone wild pops up, you guys are great, hope I can figure this out? I over paid big time for this darn thing and thought I would get more than a day out of it? When it's driving it squirts out of vent pretty hard??. I also removed gas tank to dump and clean out old debris, gas filter looks new and clean, I'm going to replace it anyway, and will replace gas lines which also look new? Thanks again.

If it is pumping fuel to the carb, there shouldn't be any need to change the mounting of the pump.
You said it spits out while driving but not up on stands?
What rpm were you running it at on stands, and for how long?
Can you post a pic of the carb setup?

It doesn't make any difference on stands, if I hold it to the floor or at idle ish speed, it doesn't spit gas out till I drop it from the floor jack and take it for a ride. I took off the bowl to see if float was stuck, it seems to have spring action?. And I have no gauges of anykind, oil or rpm.. here's some pics. I looked at the plate on side of motor to make sure it's a 244cc 3pg, because I read that the 2pgs were also made in 89..

Did you try setting the float just a little lower to shut off the fuel sooner?
They bounce around quite a bit when driving.

No, I did not no that there are any adjustments other than the the one you turn all the way in and back out 1.5 turns? How do you adjust the float ?? Thanks

If memory serves me correctly, you have a BV18 carb. The float should have a bendable tab on it. If you bend it up slightly, the float won't need to raise as far to shut off the fuel. When I adjust the float on a carb like that, I attach a piece of hose to the fuel inlet so I can blow into it and make sure the float is working the way I want it to. Hold the carb upright, like it would be installed in the motor, with the bowl off. With the float hanging down, you should be able to blow into the hose. As you slowly raise the float to the horizontal position, you shouldn't be able to blow into the hose no matter how hard you try. Don't use compressed air. Just blow into it.

Do I need to pull out the float pin? Or just try to force float up? Any idea how far up float should be? Any kind of reference point?? Thanks.

Pull the float pin. Don't lose the needle. Bend the tab upwards slightly and reinstall the float. Use the procedure I described above to check it. You may need to make several attempts.

Again, prying the tab up makes the float shut off the fuel sooner.

PS... you never want to force anything inside a carb.
