I ordered two kinds of tape. One is like a regular thermometer. It goes up and down with the surface it's attached to. The other is a five point "one time" tape. When it gets to a temp, it changes color. It never goes back to the origenal color. So with the "one time" tape, I can check it much later. (Even after I've been out of town.) I think the five points are 180, 190, 200, 210 and 220. If it blacks out the 220, I probably need to look at a D and D. Although the "two speed" motors EMP make have my interest. My PDS cart is not safe for my grand kids to drive. (Too fast) I can let them drive the Marithon, but of course they want to drive the fancy cart. |

Re: Motor heat
V-A ---- Nice setup.
My hands are too shaky these days to build stuff like that, so I'll probably end up making do with something off-the-shelf. I've ran across a couple thermometers that use the DS18B20 sensor and go up to 125°C, which is high enough for monitoring motor case temperature. Maybe one of them will find its way to my cart. |

Re: Motor heat
I still get my kicks building stuff. I discovered Arduino a while back and I really like the cheap stuff that is out there to hook up to it. The programming application is free too. I did my own layouts and I did have to solder all of those little parts on my board but I have been doing that stuff for about 50 years now. I started out building Heath Kits when I was a kid.

I took my motor on a little run and took temperature with one of those laser temperature guns and got 98°
Will take it on longer run to see how much higher it goes up. Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk |

Re: Motor heat
98F is not hot? Is that the temp uou couldn't hold your hand on or felt hot? That's the same temp as your body so it really shouldn't feel hot or cold

One thing about those laser guns, if you read the directions, they say something like "point at a 4" diameter flat surface from two feet away". I believe they want you to point it perpendicular to the surface too. It is very difficult to get a measurement the way they say. Not sure how much it effects the accuracy. A lot of people think they are reading the exact laser spot. |

Re: Motor heat
My laser gun says something like at 6" your measuring a 4 inch diameter circle or like at 12" you measure a 8" circle at 2 feet your measuring an area like 16" in diameter. So for a motor you need to be pretty close or else your gonna get influence from the body and other stuff around it.

Took the cart on a good drive this morning and took case temperature with laser gun right when I got home.
Temperature was around 150° Would that be considered acceptable? Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk |

Re: Motor heat
150°F is good.
The temperature may continue to rise for several minutes after the cart stops, so check it several times at two or three minute intervals until it stops rising. Also, the motor may have a chance to cool some on the drive home, so check it soon after the hard workout part of the trip if possible and practical |

After you stop...the motor will continue rising in heat.
What temperature reading is the one to look at? Right after a hard run or wait several minutes to see what the temperature goes up to? Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk |
