Just bought a cart, how'd I do
Great site you've got. Was a lurker before I bought.
I got a 91 Marathon with lights for 2k, PO said new batteries with upgraded controller, solenoid, cables and switch to handle 48v. I think the no-name batteries should last a few years and I could switch to 48v then. From just reading here and then looking at the cart I think its all good for 48v. What about the charger, anything to worry about? If I add a rear seat would I need to also upgrade the springs? Anything else I need to check on this or preventative maintenance I should do? Thanks again for a great site. |

to BGW
You did great except for one thing- it's an EZGO... I have a Datel meter on my cart and love it. As for upgrading the rear springs, it is recommended, but not necessary. |

Re: Just bought a cart, how'd I do
Chargers are voltage specific. You will need a 48v charger if you convert. Lots of options.
How many leafs are in the rear springs now? My Marathon (stock) had 3 leaf springs. May be enough for back seat. Maintenance: There are zerks in the front suspension. Keep it greased. Keep batteries filled to correct level. Don't let batteries sit in a partially discharged condition for very long (days). Generally, put on the charger when done with the cart for the day. Let charger finish if possible but "opportunity" charges are OK. Post a picture of the charger if you have any questions about it. Some of the old chargers have a timer and look manual but in fact are automatic. A good battery tutorial here: http://www.cartsunlimited.net/batter...o---links.html |

Thanks for the Welcome and replies.
I will get that meter for my cart. I'll check-out the leafs when I get to the camper later today. I was just wondering if this old charger is ok until I upgrade to 48v. It charges and it stops, so I guess it's ok. |

Yep, typical charger of that era. Plug cord into cart. You should hear a "click" in a few seconds. Turn knob all the way counter clockwise. Charger will shut off automatically when finished. Timer knob will stop and indicate how long it took to charge the batteries. Info only and only important if it does something unusual. Pretty tough old things. Don't get it wet. Mostly repairable.
Either of those meters are good. I have the cheaper of the two. The datel is a quality piece. Worth the extra money to some people. Personal choice. |
