Your "Battery Current" numbers are quite a bit smaller then the "Output Current" numbers.

The battery only cares about "Battery Current". And yes, motor current can be different than battery current with the kind of controllers we use. One can also argue about how we measure this current since it's far from a DC value.

I think what Dave is trying to say is that a 600A controller would be rated at 600A for the output. So mating 200A controller to a 200A battery would be limiting performance because the motor may require more than 200A under certain conditions, even though the input remains under 200A.

I’m no engineer…I have spent nights in a Holiday Inn Express…I am a licensed CPA..and in my job (I am retired) my electrical experience was limited to the on/off switch on a laptop….but if output current is on the data sheet…it’s gotta be coming from somewhere.

Dave - you're right - it's complicated... At full throttle when the controller is on for 100% of the time, the motor current will equal the battery current. At part throttle, things really do get complicated and the motor current flows even when the battery current doesn't. (A gross simplification!!!)

It was my understanding that these controllers use pulse width modulation?
I have built many PWM controlled devices and use pulse width modulation every day at work in both careers and in those cases the amp load does not increase beyond what it would be at 100% Now I suppose the power between pulses could some how be momentarily stored with capacitors or mosfets and combined with the power being pulsed to increase the amperage of the pulses but that the only way I could think of to sustain a pulsing power output higher than the supplying current but you still would only have 100% battery current at full throttle unless the voltage is manipulated.
