CVT Belt grabs 4X4
I am working on a EZ-GO CVT drive which is installed in a Pug 4x4 ATV. It appears that Pug is no longer in business or at least they have been bought up and no longer make this machine. I think it is very similar to a EZ-GO ST 4X4. The CVT drives a forward/reverse transmission which drives a transfer case for 2WD & 4WD.
The drive clutch opens wide (wider than the belt) at idle but will catch enough to engage the driven pulley so that the machine is propelled if in gear. Braking would then stall the machine. Not sure how to proceed. The machine has not seen much use as it was used on a retreat type farm by an older gentleman. When I first started working on it, there was lost of mouse nest stuff inside the CVT housing and impacted to the belt. It looked like this: I cleaned all that up and the belt looks pretty good. The clutches seem to open/close normally when in neutral. I also wonder if the drive belt is correct and if a looser one would solve the problem. The current belt has the lettering Hilliard 0655-01-006-T DF 46-3288. I cannot find this belt online or any cross reference to it. I can use all the help/info I can get. Thanks for your help. |

Re: CVT Belt grabs 4X4
That drive clutch has some writing on it.
Could be a used sled clutch and shimmed to wide for the belt. What is the width of the belt? |

Re: CVT Belt grabs 4X4
Belt is 1 1/8" wide.
Pics of drive clutch: http://www.myfishingpictures.com/dat...m/IMG_6498.JPG http://www.myfishingpictures.com/dat.../IMG_65001.JPG Why would clutch shimmed too wide be the problem? Seems to me that too narrow would be more likely the cause ... but seems to open sufficiently to be slightly wider than the belt. If I push down on the top of the belt, the driven pulley opens enough to slack the belt and allow the driven clutch to rotate without driving the belt. |

Re: CVT Belt grabs 4X4
opens wide (wider than the belt) I miss understood, I thought
it was opening quite wide. If I push down on the top of the belt, the driven pulley opens enough to slack the belt and allow the driven clutch to rotate without driving the belt. I see some belt smear at the top of the sheave is there any down in the engagement area, possibly keeping the clutch from opening the last little bit? |

That belt looks too tight. Mine is not a straight line from the primary to the secondary. There is enough length in the belt so that the belt will curve out slightly.

Re: CVT Belt grabs 4X4
I agree, the belt looks TOO tight. I would try a smaller belt?!

Re: CVT Belt grabs 4X4
Yeah it needs to be long enough you can slip it off and on, pretty easy..
That setup looks like would take some doing to get it off..The width I would not change..it needs to be about an inch and some more wide..which is what the corrugated type belt usually is. If you are saying it grabs all the time, it is the length.. I start mine in neutral, and it idles low enough (I use a switch , not the pedal actuated microswitch) I can change gears.. BUT the belt has to not be trying to engage too much, as in "grabbing" to do that. If I have the pedal hooked up ( which I do ) I left off the pedal and the engine dies, to change from forward to reverse. Not sure, though WHY this looks like it does.. It looks stock but WAY to tight for CVT . |
