Default Testing solid state speed controllers...

Guys I was just wandering if anyone has any test methods for finding out for sure if speed controllers are bad or good without putting power to them? I know IQ systems you can diagnose with a CDM but what about if a CDM won't connect or you can put power to a controller. I know with all the intricate circuitry that you can't test one the way you normally would other simple electronic components because you get all kinds of different readings (or at least that's my understanding). So does anyone know of a way to test these things? Thanks for any info.
