G2 transmission lag

I have a Yamaha G2 rear-end in a modified Harley Davidson cart.

When put in gear, the clutch has to spin up in order for the transmission to go into gear. Is this normal with Yamahas ? Sorry, didnt build the cart, just trying to fix it. Thanks

Not normal, sounds like an adjustment on the shifting cables.

The G2 transaxle is a constant mesh transmission with a sliding clutch. It requires motion or rotation to shift, the sliding clutch needs to be lined up so it will engage [forward/reverse] gears. Yes, check your cable adjustment, make sure the springs on the shift cable aren't broken as they apply pressure to the sliding clutch to complete the shift.

The clutch should not have to "spin up" for the gears to engage. This will cause damage.

Maybe my wording is lacking...

Sitting still, with the motor running and brake on, if I shift into reverse from forward, the only way to get it to go into gear is to rev up or even roll forward first before it engages reverse.

I will have to look at the shift cables and make sure they are tight. Maybe after the first year of this cart getting a lot of use, the cables have stretched some.

So I'm guessing the motor has a spring loaded primary clutch that is forced all the way open when at very low speeds. This condition does not turn the belt until some rpm increase happens. All the 4-cycle Yamaha clutches don't have the spring, which allows the clutch dog to "pop in place" before the engine rpms increase.

My G2 does not engage the gears unless it's running. If it's not running you have to rock it back and forth so the dogs on the slider can enter the gear. I don't know what you mean by "spin up" -- I just know that a constant mesh gearbox needs motion to shift -- doesn't matter if its a golf cart or my Harley or a 13 speed "Road Ranger".
