Default Solenoid will not disengage Club Car DS

Hi guys, I have 2 Club Car DS 1999, one needs a controller and the other works just fine. I found a second hand controller on Ebay and purchased it. I decided to put the one I purchased from Ebay in the good working cart just as a test. Everything seemed to work just fine, but then I noticed the solenoid wasn't clicking when I depressed or released the pedal, but it was driving just like it should. If I put the run/tow switch into tow it will click and denergize, and if I put it back into the run position, it clicks again to energize it and stays on permanently.

Would this eventually burn out the solenoid if I ran it this way?

I have put the original controller back in and all is back to normal, so it's certainly a controller issue.

Has anyone else heard of this and can I open up the controller and fix it?

I have had a look at it and it doesn't seem very obvious on how to open it up to see if maybe something has burnt up inside or something.

Here are the details of the controller and cart.

1999 Club Car DS golf cart, 48v Powerdrive Plus Regen 2, Model # A9928-778541. The controller is a 220 amp GE p/n IC3645SH4D222C2.

Any help would be grateful, thanks!

Not only would it damage the solenoid, but that is also a constant draw on the battery pack while the cart is sitting. You could put a switch in-line to the solenoid to cut power to it so it would turn off, but that would be a last ditch effort if you had no other choice.

I'd return that controller as defective.

I was thinking the same thing too.

Was hoping someone on here had dissected one of these controllers and knows how to take it apart. I kinda tried myself, but was afraid of damaging something.

Default Re: Solenoid will not disengage Club Car DS (Solved and fixed now)

I managed to fix the problem now.

Turns out it was a faulty mosfet. I opened up the controller and managed to find a faulty mosfet that controls the switching on/off of the solenoid, I replaced the mosfet and now all is working normal.

If anyone else has the same problem her is some useful information.

The location of the mosfet on the circuit board is Q17 and the mosfet is a IRF530 N-Channel HEXFET Power MOSFET, 100v - 0.16Ω - 14A

The mosfet only cost a few cents and save me hundreds by not having to buy a new controller.
