Pretty sure most people leave them open. They’re not very large, but you can weld them shut if you prefer. Just make sure not to overheat the crank or ruin the other bearing surfaces.

I’ve removed the CB once. I left them open and had no issues. I did have a noticeable amount of vibration at lower rpm but it smoothed out a good bit as it revved higher.
