Here is an electrical schematic that may help you figure out your direction selector, etc.

eehhh...not exactly... What the F/R switch does is flips the polarity of the motor winding to reverse direction. (Series) means the motor armature and field windings are in series. You need a schematic which sccowboy posted.

THANY YOU ! Exactly what I needed. It looks like I have most of what I need to make it work again. I am positive ill be back with more questions as this moves forward......makes sense now
