OK.....ready to give up.

I have an ezgo workhorse with a mci 295. It ran terrible since I bought it. The engine has just been rebuilt. Once back together it still ran really bad low rpm fine but really flat no power at all and a dead miss it mid rpm ....it never really got up to high. I checked valve lash .004...compression 140 in each. The miss seemed consistent so I focused on ignition changed ignitor, coil then finally discovered the pickup was rubbing the flywheel. changed that no miss but still runs bad......changed the flywheel (old one had washed out key way)....now its worse....misses (even at low rpm) back fires ......seems like ignition timing is off.......Are there different flywheels for these?......I believe cam timing is correct. Is there any way ignition timing can be off?????
