Default G16 rear diff FILLED with grease

Yamaha g16/rear diff completely packed with grease, just got the cart, she is running well after a carb and a fuel pump. Picked it up at a state auction. It sat for 3 plus years, I went to service diff today and there is no fluid just packed with red grease lots of it!. It runs perfect and it wasn't hot after I went riding, my guess is they could not get it to stop leaking so they just crammed grease instead, will this hurt anything if I don't fix it, I know people that rock grease in different for old trucks and it has worked. Has anyone seen this before and what should I do? Thanks

first, you said grease, not in the pun kin, if i remember right, that's 90 wt. gear lube,, you pop out the rubber plug, and squirt in the 90, until it runs out the same hole its full, replace the plug. if you don't see a leak its done for many years,, steve

Yes grease, I opened the plug and grease is filled all in there. IT IS COMPLETELY FILLED WITH GREASE. no 90w like there is supposed to be. the cover has been removed and you can see silicon on the cover. so someone drained it and greased the hell out of it. must be 2 tubes of grease in there. that is going to be hell to clean out. what is the harm in grease?

Grease does not splash. Your diff has a reservoir that a large gear runs in. This gear carries oil up into the diff to the areas that need it. With grease installed there is no splashing, and upper areas can go dry. Also, when it gets cold that diff is going to stiffen up quite a bit, robbing HP. I would be prepared to change it out ASAP.

Oh god, what a mess. I would not leave it like that. As said above, grease wont be sent up to the (expensive) input shaft at the top. I would at least scrape out everything you can, then add the specified 415cc gear oil.

Yeah, I know what the right answer is. I guess I know what I will be doing next weekend. But I need to know why a mechanic at a college campus did that to begin with I'm just hoping it just needs a gasket and some rtv and a whole lot of rags to remove grease. Also this golf cart had a high flow fuel pump with no return. It had fuel in the crankcase at first. I think it forced it's way in there. I put a stock carb and fuel pump on and changed oil twice it's not smoking anymore. The crankcase tube vacuum line was on was clogged, now it drives great.

God that is gonna be a pain to clean out. I'm afraid if I don't get all grease out it will clog vent lines any pointers how to clean this mess?

If it were me, I think I'd take off the cover, rake out all the grease I could with a putty knife or a stick. Then I would put the cover back on, fill it with diesel, Then (don't drive it) but put it in gear, take the belt off and push it up and down the drive way a few times. Then, pull the cover back off and let it drain all night. Silicone the cover back on, fill with 75/90 and drive it a month. If there are no leaks (in seals etc), I'd change out the 75/90 and refill with same!!
