Crank spins freely part way around

My 2002 DS with Kawasaki will not start. The starter spins the crank and then the crank stops part of the way around. The starter then spins without turning the tight belt.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you can't make a full revolution of the main driving clutch then you probably have a broken connecting rod.

probably broken connecting rod due to lack of oil,dirty oil,over revving due to govenor failure or someone disconnected the governor and rev limiter. Time to pull the engine and do exploratory surgery.

Tighten the belt, it may not be getting through the compression stroke, best to try that before breaking the engine down. Worth a try.

Easier to pull the spark plug and spin it. No full revolution then probably broken rod.
