Cleaned the carb, no difference. It spits and sputters and rarely builds enough rpms to engage the clutch. In reverse it backfires and doesn't run.

I'm guessing crank seals at this point and/or something in the carb is screwey. If I didn't say before I put a new plug in it and it has great spark.

I think it's also time to remove the exhaust pipe, and look in there with a mirror.

Move the piston up, and down by hand. If you see a square hole through the exhaust port, the piston is in backwards.

If it's good, well then you are part way to disassembly for changing the seals.

I see a rectangular hole on the side of the piston

It's in backwards.

Just like we suspected at the beginning of this thread.

Pull the jug. Fix the piston. Also make sure that the rings are bevel side up, and that the ends wrap around the alignment pins in the ring grooves.

Since the engine is already out, you should seriously consider changing the crankshaft seals too.

Crankshaft seals should be here Thursday. I guess this is what you get when you buy a non running cart. Good this it's not that hard of a fix. Pulling the motor now

Is the rod bearing on these normally very sloppy?

Side to side, but not up, and down.

Well I got the piston switched and the crank seals look brand new. I had some time so I threw the motor back in. Same results. Spits and sputters in forward and struggles to build rpms. In reverse it spits and sputters and back fires. I'll try the seals once they come in.
