Default Yamaha g16 engine rebuild kit

Hey guys , I’m new to the forum . I just bought a Yamaha g16 as a project . I think the jn6 engine slung a rod . They had the governor zip tied and a wheel off the rim . First sign she had been abused. The motor is seized , but I can turn the crank 180 degrees before it locks up . I figured since I’m pulling it out to fix it that I should go ahead and rebuild it . The problem is I can’t find a rebuild kit online anywhere. All the earlier models have a kit for around $280 , the only kit I find for mine is closer to $1000. I really don’t want to drop a clone in because of the hours it will take to make it fit and prefer the governor . I also like how durable the Yamaha motors are , but if it is a grand thats the route I will take . Can anyone tell me where I can get a kit and why are they so hard to find ?

Tear it down, see what it needs, and order the OEM parts. There are a couple of guys here that can help with the part numbers...

And welcome....

Yamaha doesn't offer "kits", and aftermarket "kits" would likely be China knockoff parts. So as stated above, tear it down, figure out what you need, and go from there (with Yamaha parts). I'm guessing you likely have a probably have a balance shaft, or possibly cam problem. If it's a balance shaft problem, just tossing the balance shaft in the trash can is one option. Haven't seen much along the lines of broken rod. Won't know till you get your hands dirty. Remove the motor for the job, and get/borrow a clutch puller bolt, or clutch destruction is almost guaranteed.

If your putting the stock motor back in, don't even bother to rebuild it. Buy a new one for 1450 bucks. You get new coil- chances are yours is on its way out, and you get a new carburetor to boot.
Pull the new one out of the box and your done in an hour.

That is the "sweetest" easy option, and a upgrade for a G16 (you get the larger 347cc G22 motor). But, it is pricey, and "on back order". How do I know? I'm waiting for one.

Externally they look the same, bolt in same location, accept many of the same parts.
G16 motor is a 301cc, G22 is a 347cc. Displacement increase is from larger piston, crank is same part number. Other difference is that the G22 cam includes a compression release, and G16 does not.
