1985 g1 solenoid clicks when press on gas fwd and reverse but thats it battery great fully charged and load tested where do i start

Bench test your starter / gen by following this:

That's for a Harley but it's the same with the G1.

That you aren't getting any starter spin in F or R may mean a starter or associated wiring issue. The brushes may be too worn to make enough contact to spin.

Your brushes are worn. When you tapped it you knocked them against the armature just a bit better than they were thus making it start. It will fail again. Replacing the brushes is very easy to do.
