Default New Battery Pack Trickle Charge??

I have a 2013 CC Precedent 48V with an upgraded motor and controller. To achieve speeds in excess of 35mph, I purchased a six pack of Trojan T-875’s and just installed them after testing each cell, (their SOC appears to be about 75% for each battery).

Each time I used the factory charger On my old batteries, they would gas and gurgle so much that I always removed the seat for ventilation. To reduce this I purchased a 48v trickle charger/conditioner which takes about 16 hours to bring a 50% SOC back to full. I needed to replace this 7-year-old battery pack because it’s range was terrible, and the new motor/controller are very hungry for amps.

I will charge the pack to full now, and then run it down to 75% SOC with an easy foot on the accelerator, (and no hills)... then repeat this process 12 times. My question is: does anyone see a problem with me using the trickle charger during this break-in procedure? I’m afraid the CC factory charger puts too much stress on the batteries with its high amp output.

I plan on always using the trickle charger after each use; can anyone tell me the pros and cons of not using the factory charger instead?

I just looked it up, and this isn’t even a charger... it’s a maintainer designed for winter storage... but it charges the batteries beautifully by itself... it just takes a lot longer... and I’m not in any hurry here:

That charger will never charge your batteries correctly. Best use a normal charger to charge them. Then you can put that one on to keep them charged.

So this schauer charger took 28 hours before it kicked off.

Initially the pack read 52.6 volts, but it finally stabilized at 50.93 volts.

I ran it around the island for an hour, then retuned to a 49.50 volt reading

I’m about to recharge the pack back to full again

So you suggest the faster factory charger is only way to go?

If ou want those new batteries to last their normal life span they need to be charged, not just topped off. That requires higher amps and voltage to do. Once the golf cart charger turns its self off the maintainer is a great way to keep them at full charge until you use the cart again.

Gasing is a normal and important part of the charging process. Helps keep sulfate build up off the plates.
