Default Knocking noise in steering

I have a 1990 g8 that has a knocking noise in the steering shaft when weight of cart shifts from one side to the other. I can reach in to the steering shaft where the pinion gear attaches to the steering column and I can move it and it makes the noise that I’m hearing when I’m driving it. There seems to be some play in it. Im thinking it may be a bushing that is worn and has left play in the column. Any ideas?
