1998 club car ds battery not fully charging
Hello all, I have a 1998 club car ds 36v. I recently had an issue where the cart was trying to move forward when the ignition was off, go pedal not depressed, and the fwd rev switch was arching when moving from neutral. Additionally, the battery charger was flashing yellow when charging (low voltage error). So after some research, we diagnosed and replaced the solenoid. Cart is no longer arching when being put into fwd or rev and no longer surging fwd when ignition is not on and pedal is not engaged and no longer throwing any fault codes on the battery charger. New problem is, it seems like the batteries are not holding a charge or not fully charging. Charger plugs in, turns on fine, red light to indicate low battery, sits on the charger for the normal 4-6 hours, green light comes on and charger turns off, but the cart is not even making it around the block twice before I am slowing down and acting like its out of battery. I did verify all the wiring, on the solenoid as well as the battery, cleaned all battery terminals and checked water levels. Is it possible the bad solenoid fried my batteries? Or possibly damaged my charger? Any tips are appreciated. Thanks

Re: 1998 club car ds battery not fully charging
More likely the batteries were on the way out and caused the solenoid to weld shut. Low voltage causes higher than normal amp draw and will make things get hot, which can lead to bad connections or cause solenoid and V-glide contacts to overheat and burn.
You'll likely need to replace the battery pack, but first I would check the water levels in each battery and check the voltage of each one individually. If the pack has been charged and is reaching a full charge each one will be around 6.3v or a little more approx 12 hours after charging. Check each one then drive the cart for 10-15 minutes and check each one again. Healthy batteries will rebound and still be above 6.0v, if any are below 6v they've likely failed and will need to be replaced. Depending on the age of the pack you are probably going to have to replace all 6. |

Re: 1998 club car ds battery not fully charging
Did a full charge and then waited 12 hours and tested them with a Volt meter. All were reading 6.3 except one battery was reading 5.7. Checking from first battery to last battery was 37.3. Checked again while cart was on and pedal was depressed about 75%. First to last battery was only reading at around 28.9-30ish. Drove it around for about 15 minutes and the 5.7 battery dropped to .45, all others had normal readings. I'm assuming that one battery has a bad cell. All batteries are less than 2 years old. Should I try replacing just that one?
Also, you mentioned vglide - that was just replaced in December after burning out and the cart has run fine until the solenoid went out. |
