After the 6:1 install
Finally caught up to post the afterward results.
97 Club Car, stock 48V motor 3.10 HP. Removed stock gears in transaxle to install 6:1 gears from Carts Plus (http://www.cartpartsplus.com/high-sp...-club-car.html ). Their advertisement about gears state: “High Speed gear set for Club Car with KAWASAKI AXEL two models and two ratios to choose from. DO YOU HAVE THE NEED FOR SPEED? Here’s the cure. These gears in 8:1 RATIO will get you approximately 26 MPH from a stock cart with standard size tires and 34MPH with the 6:1 RATIO.” Well, I was driving on flat road zero degree of rise, wind to my back with a stock club car with the 6:1 ratio and top speed is 20.3 MPH (clocked by base police and GPS are within .1 of each other. So much for my need for speed…. Batteries are top of the line interstate batteries, installed three months ago, volts are good sitting still and under load, batteries are fully charged and ready to roll for this test. Note also when installing these gears, the main gear (bolt on) will only fit one way if you fail to note the rotation prior to installation, overall the installation was easy, and simple to complete. Talking with Plum Quick for the 36V motor to build, concern over the stock 48V heating up or acting up after driving cart, I have put 12 miles on cart this morning buzzing around the base for ship visits, no change in operating temp on motor, warm to the touch, but I can leave my hand on it and it is only warm. I had to grind away a 1/8 of the housing gusset to allow the new gears to clear within the housing, no issues, small amount that shouldn’t affect the operation of the transaxle. Overall, not the results I was hoping for, but an improvement over the 14mph that I had, and yes I drive this cart all over the base, in traffic, on piers and through parking lots. Faster means of transportation around the base. Cart has all the lights, and I use hand signals to turn and change lanes. Once the motor and other electronics are reviewed by Plum Quick for the best set up received and installed, I can register as a LSV; VA is rather easy process once you have POC with DMV in Richmond. After Plum Quick upgrade, the all wheel disk brakes, front a-arm installation will promptly follow. |

Re: After the 6:1 install
Thanks for sharing the results!
I'm pretty sure that your cart's controller is in current limit the whole time and that is why you are not hitting your expected speed. If it was not not the case your motor temperature would tell you a different story. (Given your batteries are not the limiting factor) 6:1 is a heck of a load compared to 12:1 original! On a slight downhill you would see your expected speed for sure. My cart has the original 12:1 (close enough) ratio and I run 23" dia tires. I tried 26" but I took them off because my range suffered badly over the 23" tires. I think you're still doing good! 14MPH to 20MPH is a big difference and since your motor is not over heating, you know it is not harmed along with the batteries! I think you are running on current limit by the controller but it's better than killing the batteries or motor IMHO! Barna |

Re: After the 6:1 install
The speed is good enough to met requirements for LSV… that was the first goal after I realized I really didn’t need a lifted off road speed demon-mobile. After some thought, I still get the mileage to tour the base as required and meet the minimum speed for Virginia LSV.
Will see what Plum Quick recommends, but otherwise brakes will be installed and (1) marine manual wiper assy, which will never be used, but will be a check in the box for LSV inspection. Other items can be completed after the LSV cert, title and plate are issued. I did spend a few hours to properly adjust and center the steering, makes a great difference, and located a Virginia Beach decal printer, who is creating Navy Working Uniform (NWU) vinyl skin for the cart. Will be adding Wounded Warrior Program logos and Chief Petty Officer Anchors, when completed I will post picture for avatar. This site has been a wealth of information, thanks to everyone who has added to my "lessons learned" about Club Cars. |

Re: After the 6:1 install
Is this cart a regen? In 97, it could have been either regen or series. Does it have a run/tow switch? Also in 97, you could have one of two different types of POTENTIOMETER. V-Glide or continuously variable pot mounted to the gas pedal under the cart. Your flat ground speed seems a little low to me considering you have good batteries.

Be sure to post some pics when you get that wrap on the thing! I can't remember if you have everything else stock!!!!!! Do you have a bigger controller, cables, ect? If not, a 400-500 amp controller, HD solenoid, HD F/R and some 4ga cables sound like they could be next! You say you like this forum and we would love to spend all your money! |

To the OP. I just purchased a 97 CC DS also, and really appreciate your updates and experiences, as I will also be looking for a little more speed. How does the gearing affect hill speed and torque? |

Re: After the 6:1 install
You could also do a controller output test to make sure that you are actually getting full battery pack voltage to the motor at WOT.

Re: After the 6:1 install
On previous posts prior to the change there were comments that I would loose torque and power, I was concerned, but after install results show that I have good “get up and go”. Prior to change the cart would snap you head back on takeoff, now it is smoother, not bone jarring. I have two longer slight inclines, cart did slow to 18.2 mph prior to cresting and then back up to full speed on the flat, I also have pier entrances that are 8% grades, went right up inclines as it did prior to change out.
Overall, as I drive cart today for ship visits, it was a good change out. Sent a follow up email to Plum Quick, but I think I will start changing out electronic pieces one at a time and measure the performance results and monitor to see if there are any heat affects on motor. Brakes will be next weekend’s installation along with the “symbolic” manual wiper assy. I have to get seat belts and "slow moving vehicle" triangle sign installed prior to passing the base police again, I was warned today.... Last edited by oconnorb; 10-23-2011 at 05:12 PM..
