Default drive clutch alignment on a big block

HI All, I'm a bit confused as to how to align my clutch and hope someone can help me out. I have a 99 ez-go with a honda 24 hp in it. I just purchased a clutch from Tom at ccp to replace the stock ez-go. When I mounted it, it was way out from the old clutch and I had to move the entire engine mounting bracket over as far as it would go to get it aligned. I don't have an alignment gauge or access to one. I'm in mexico with the cart so finding a tool isn't an option. I'm aligning it by putting a straight edge across the stationary side of the driven pulley and setting the stationary side of the drive pulley on that same line. Is this an acceptable way of doing this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Default Re: drive clutch alignment on a big block

The stationary side of each clutch is on the opposite side of each other.
I ripped a 1x piece of lumber to 1-3/16" wide(or whatever the distance is between the open primary sheaves at the shaft) then set it into the primary clutch. You can float it to the centerline by feeling it by hand. I then positioned the motor so the 'stick' lined up with the centerline of the secondary clutch. It should sit right on top of the closed secondary clutch sheaves. I double checked everything and then mounted the motor there. I have run it that way for a year now and it works perfectly. No belt wear, belt flipping, or vibration.
