why is OBC on cart and not charger?
With lots of help from this board, I learned a lot about the OBC and that mine has gone bad. It seems the OBC main functions are to make sure the batteries charge properly and that the cart is shut down during charging.
Why is this on the cart and not the charger? Seems the charger would be the place for the location of the charging circuit logic. Any thoughts? |

It's because Club Car engineers are "smarter" than other engineers.
Just look at some of their other wiring and component decisions..... |

Re: why is OBC on cart and not charger?
It is because the OBC saves exactly how much "juice" was lost during the running cycle, and when you go and plug in the charger, it tells the charger to replace exactly how much "juice" was lost...

Re: why is OBC on cart and not charger?
It stores tons of information for dealers to monitor fleets of carts. Unlike a brain in a charger, an obc allows for single vehicle data. Charge history, amount of charge cycles, amount of usage per vehicle are only a few examples

Re: why is OBC on cart and not charger?
For the average one car owner the OBC is over engineered, but for dealers and fleet owners it does provide a lot of other info regarding use and state of the batteries. You do need the CDM (Communication Display Module) to access this info which it gathers thru the battery warning light on the dash (like a tv remote).
