1983 gas marathon governor setting
I have a 1983 gas marathon with new clutches and belt, the thing runs like a top starts easy and functions properly I would just like to get a little more speed put of it. We use it to pull the grandsons jr dragster back to the pits after a run it normally has two a adults and a couple of kids on it (has the rear seat) the jr is on a tow dolly so not much drag there I would just like to go a little faster without hurting the engine. I have read post were they just unhook the governor and go but like I said I don't want to over rev it. What is a save high rpm for these little engines? I am thinking on un-hooking the governor and installing a small tach and maybe a rev limiter.
Does anyone have any ideas on a safe and easy way to speed this up a little, I am wanting to go a little faster than 12mph but stay under 20mph Thanks Dennis |

Re: 1983 gas marathon governor setting
On my 90 mararthon I have a thumb type nut that I can tighten down the spring to make it harder for the govenor to slow the linkage back down. I am not sure if your yr has the same deal but my gov. is on the rear end and is attached to the throttle cable end that is hooked to a plate that in turn moves the linkage to carb. If speed increases the unit in the rear end acts like a speed sensor and moves the plate back and thus closes the throttle back. If you look into those areas you will probably find what is happening. I have heard of guys tying back the spring or even removing it but they do have some trouble then also.
Just sending this post as I see no one with your yr has chimed in. |

Re: 1983 gas marathon governor setting
We just adjusted the governor to where it raps under 5000rpm and it picked up a little speed and runs great,
