Default 89 EZ GO Gas over heating after brief rides

Our cart is overheating and shuts itself down. It won't start again until it cools off and we're not taking it far either...

The main place it seems to be the most hot is the metal pipe coming off of the engine connecting to the muffler. We've bbq'd the muffler thinking that would help but it hasn't.

Recent changes - HEI conversion (ignition coil, control module), top engine rebuild, new fuel lines/filters, new air filter & new solenoid.

Any ideas what's causing the overheating and how to fix?
