Battery bad after running in cold weather?
I have an EZGO TXT 2001 gas cart that I bought from a person that rebuilds/refurbs golf carts. I'm assuming the battery was new when I purchased the cart a year ago.
We ran all day in snow/cold weather (between 18-25 degrees), then hopped in to run home and cart would not start. The starter turned over, but engine didn't run. After getting back and cleaning spark plugs (they were nasty), making sure it was getting gas and air, starter still turned but engine didn't start. I put a battery charger on for around 10 minutes and it fired right up. Trickle charged for a few hours the other day and poured some Sea Foam in the tank as a maintenance. Ran good for about an hour, then dead again. Hooked up battery charger for 30 mins and charging gauge indicated "charged", one press on the gas pedal and charge reads as dead again. Starter still turns over but engine does not run. Note: I have head/tail light kit, LED underbody, and running lights on roof. I rarely burn any of these lights unless engine is running and it's dark. I never let it just sit there with the lights on. Questions: - Does it sound like the battery is the issue? - Did cold weather effect the battery? We did a lot of starting/stopping in the cold. - With these 12v lighting accessories, what's the best type of replacement battery? Thanks for the help! |

Sounds as if the battery is only holding a surface charge.
Charge it and do a load test, also be sure all connections are clean and secure |

With your accessories get the largest standard
battery that will fit and you can afford. No need to pop for deep cycle's. |

Re: Battery bad after running in cold weather?
you need to check battery volts at rest, and then check it again with the cart running and see if it is charging, if it's charging it should be around 14 to 16 volts with the cart running

Off to buy a multimeter. I can at least check volts at rest. |

Re: Battery bad after running in cold weather?
Checked the battery while at rest. Reads 12.6v. When I press gas pedal, drops down to 11.4v while starter runs. Engine never fires. Battery climbs back up to 12.6v when pedal is released. Does that sound like a bad battery? Makes me think something else is wrong. Pulled the spark plugs and they are dripping black gas. Is that normal?

Re: Battery bad after running in cold weather?
Not normal, may need to clean those and or replace with new plugs, sounds like you are getting to much fuel or no spark.
