Default Over charging battery

We're having a problem with a mid 00's workhorse with a 350. It seems to be over charging the battery. Battery and wires get hot. Is this a voltage regulator problem and if so, where is the voltage regulator? Is it built in the starter/generator or seperate?

Some one will chime in soon, You may want to check voltage on battery when not running, Should be around 12 volts, While motor is running the voltage should increase a couple volts,

It's separate, should be under the black cover, it's square, maybe 2", has a bolt going through the center of it holding it in place and 4 wires coming out of it I believe. I would say that's the problem or the green wire going to the start/gen is pinched and grounded
