96 ezgo batttery not charging
Cart was running fine this weekend. Stopped at a stop sign and cart was dead and would not turn over. Towed it home and used jumper cables and started fine but took them off and cart would not start. Battery reading 12.2 volts but when pedal is pressed drops to 2.3. Also when cart was jumped and running checked the voltage at the battery and was only getting 9.6 Could this be a battery bad or starter/gen issue?

Re: 96 ezgo batttery not charging
Here's the general rule of thumb. If it's working as a starter, it's probably working as a generator too. That leaves you with a voltage regulator, or battery issue.
Since you already checked the voltage at the battery, you are half way there. There is a small green wire going from the generator to the voltage regulator. Disconnect the wire at the regulator, and ground it out. Run the cart to speed again, and check your voltage at the battery. It should go up with the speed to about 19 volts. If this works as advertised, you have a bad voltage regulator. |

I just wanted to be clear that the part of the wire connecting to the generator is what gets grounded. The pigtail on your regulator just flops around.

Will give that a try and let you know. Was leaning toward the regulator but wanted to see if anyone else has had the same issue. Thanks.

Re: 96 ezgo batttery not charging
Got a chance to trouble shoot last night. When grounding the wire from the starter/gen battery was showing 17-18.5 volts. Will get a new voltage regulator and install. Thanks for the help.

I just replaced mine a month ago. Easy install and worked great.
Good luck with your cart |
