Default Yamaha G1 low compression

I have a Yamaha G1 which has served me well, it started to surge when accelerating, I checked all hoses and cleaned carby, all looks good, changed carby to see if this helped but to no avail. Replaced coil, no difference. Took reed valve off, looks ok a little dirty, from here was able to move piston around insided cylinder, this cant be good, feel I need to rebuild top-end. Any opinions.

I would start with compression check if it is low pull it apart and clean up the top of piston there should be a stamp in it STD 25 50 75 or 1.0 find out what one you have and order next size bigger once you get piston in take to local machine shop and have them bore it out this way of doing it is significantly less money than buying the "top end kit"....also while you are doing with crank seals should be replaced

If you can wiggle your piston head, rebuilding the top end wont help anything as thats not where the compression is being lost. Its being lost through your piston rings. If it is in fact that bad, your cylinder walls are probably scored to hell and your going to need to take it and get it machined along with larger rings, new piston, new wrist pin, and id make sure to check all clearances on the crank journals. Piston walk is one of the worst things that can happen in an engine

Ok have taken piston out and although it looks very cruddy can't see any scoring also the cylinder wall looks pretty good. I have attached some pics to show this. What do I need to do from here?

Looks like the top ring is broke? Or is that just the picture if that's the case refer back to my first response on here and make sure you check/replace crank seals

Piston clearance is .16mm, does this mean I will need to purchase another larger piston and bore out cylinder, or is this still workable?
